Piedades in Costa Rica
This small town, not far from the capital, has much to offer sightseers

Piedades is a small town near Santa Ana, west of the capital of Costa Rica, San Jose. Many tourists bypass Piedades, but I recommend visiting this little town in order to get a sense of what Costa Rica is really like. There are beautiful hills surrounding Piedades and wonderful opportunities for hiking and sightseeing.
If you need a guide to help show you around the area, email the gentleman whose self-description appears below. He has two sons who speak English. He represents a version of Costa Rica that many people don't get--an agrarian past in which the main form of transportation were horses and people lived off the land. Here is how he describes the role he plays in connecting the past to the present:
Hago este personaje por que estas formas de vestir en esos tiempos ya se perdieron y yo lo que hago es rescatar esas tradiciones. Estos campesinos bajaban de la montaña con sus bestias, que eran el medio de transporte mas usual, ya que les servía para llevar sus productos como el maíz, frijoles, café, etc. También servía como ambulancia para trasladar, a gente mordido por serpientes, niños con lombrices en el estómago, con sarampión, diarreas, etc. Los llevaban a los pueblos para que los curaran, por que no había otro medio de transporte. Cuando voy a los pueblos me felicitan por que soy el único que representa al verdadero campesino. He tenido invitaciones de otros países para hacer representaciones. Yo generalmente voy a los topes vestido con ropa manchada, la bestia con barro en las patas, y lo que mas llama la atención es el gallo que me pongo en mi cabeza y se queda ahí todo el tiempo.
