i do not agree with some of your claims though, namely god hates straight people (very interesting thought though), but Lot's fate was interesting to say the least. i would have to point out that that claim is seemingly just as misconstrued as the "god hate's fags" is, though,attempting to come from your own perspective of the article, i do not think it was meant to be such an important position as more just food for thought.

keeping the main idea in mind though, we do not know whether god really does hate gays and lesbians or if god actually does hate straights, faith is not fact and when faith is turned into fact, we see the ugliness that can reside in us and phenomena like this "god hates fags" campaign, racial supremacy ideologies (ku klux klan) and really any other ideological extremist, religious extremist, and so many more that leave their tarnishing marks in history.

I happened on your homiletic of Genesis 19 while researching for an upcoming article called “God Hates Phelps” for my website (www.moralscienceclub.blogspot.com). I believe that Phelps is an abomination of the worst kind, not that he might be heterosexual, but that he condemns others in the name of God. He paints the Bible with an excessively literal brush so that he can extract the vile message that “God Hates F#gs”.

Now, I ask you, is there anything different with the extraction “God Hates Straights”? Is your redux any less vile?



You see, only a fool would fight evil with evil. Mr. Phelps and his wackos are perfectly content protesting opposite people with “God Hates Straights” placards. You are only sinking to his level. I’m sure he would love the company. Now, let me give you the truth in Genesis 19. In fact, I covered this chapter in a Bible Lesson I gave two weeks ago.



The men at the door did want to have sex with the angels. Your silly comment wondering whether the angels had rectums is irrelevant. The men never found that out, remember? Your other interpretation of Lot’s daughters is just as shallow. The only good point you make is that Viagra was not invented yet, so how did Lot do it? Well, in less than 40 years and 42 MILLION abortions, our illegitimacy rate hovers near 70%! What went wrong? Go back to that cave and find out. The daughters didn’t believe that God would give them children, so they social-engineered a child for each of them. Yes, the Bible mocks our social engineering efforts, and looking at the havoc wrought by abortion, welfare, ethnic cleansing et al, I think the Bible has got it exactly right.



So why did God burn Sodom? What was the specific reason? It wasn’t because of homosexuality or heterosexuality but the fact that Sodom and Gomorrah were irrevocably broken. There was rape, but there was no love. There were only 4 righteous people, Lot’s family, whom the angels escorted to safety by grabbing their hands and running hard for the hills. In fact, this is a great story of God’s salvation. In the previous chapter, Abraham meets the angels who are on their way to Sodom. They reveal their intentions. Abraham fears for Lot’s safety and begs that they not destroy the city for 50 people; the Angel says he would spare Sodom if it contained 50 righteous people (people who knew and loved God). Abraham then supplicates that they it be saved for 45 righteous people, and He says yes, then 40, then 30, on down to ten. Assuming there were 10 righteous people, the Angel would have spared ALL two thousand or so people. Not bad. Even better is that the angels brought out the only 4 righteous people they could find by the hand. And they even saved them once already by blinding the men of the mob so they couldn’t find Lot’s door (remember, that’s how the ugly mob scene ended). The destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah came down to two things; the oppression by its inhabitants of other people (see Chapter 18) and its miserable reality of sexual perversion; all the relationships of these cities were broken. It is that corruption, that brokenness, that God hates. The absence of love in Sodom and Gomorrah is self-evident.



Don’t be an apologist for rapists. You are no different than I would be were I to try to twist the Bible to accommodate Mr. Phelps’ perverted paradigm. Gays will only find themselves in the same pit with Phelps by being apologists for anything earmarked “gay”. John Wayne Gacy and Jeffrey Dahmer were wicked, gay men. So were the men of Sodom. God hates (loves less) the wicked. And God hates Phelps. As for f#gs, God would never say a bigoted word. My last word to the homosexual crowd is this, get over it. How could God be happy if you ask Him to put your partner first? God created you and He belongs in first place. We came into this world alone and we go out alone. The only thing that really matters in life is God. If you can’t accept that, then you have a problem. Do you think it matters whether a validation stamp from some government or religious corner is going to make a difference? What good is a Roman same-sex marriage certificate, or an Ottoman one, or in 500 years an American or an Episcopalian one (both will likely have disappeared; and both for the very same reason – lack of authenticity)? If gays want what is last, the flesh, to be first, then the consequences that has on their spirit cannot be good.



As you may have noticed, hating means loving less. The absence of love is apathy, which is worse. Paul could not have become a great apostle if he didn’t care. God turned his passion around is all. Therefore, God hates (loves less) Phelps. I hate (love less) Phelps, and so do you hate (love less) Phelps. And how can you reconcile hating (loving less) God, because that is what you do when you put your partner or your lifestyle first.

I came across your site looking for info about Amakusa. I stayed to look through a few other posts. As someone who is in Classical Studies I disagree with your take on the whole Lot and Sodom and Gomorrah episode. I don't think you're so much wrong as just perhaps approaching it from the wrong perspective. I look at the text and I see an account of Canaanite culture and perhaps a retroactive account for a long past destruction of a place. But I don't see it as God really hates heteros, or perhaps your tongue was in your cheek while writing that one. Intersting site. Thank you.

I think all this story shows and confirms is that if you are going to try to learn from the Bible, you need to realize that it is not written by god, The Bible is a collection of writings from many different men, each with their own views. All the stories, lessons, poetry the Bible contains should not be taken literally or looked to for advice. This story about Le or whatever his name was just proves this.

I am an independent fundemental Baptist. Which means that I believe in the KJV Bible from cover to cover. Even if it rubs me the wrong way. I was wondering if you have ever read The book of Leviticus or even some of the New Testament. It speaks volumes on Sodomy concerning males and females. The scriptures are not quiet on any deviant act. You must just read and take it literally if you are not closed minded. As I read through these comments and the e-mails Kevin has received I had noticed that although there is one from a Buddhist, it is mostly from Christians of some form or another.
I, am Jewish. And Just like Christians we are brought up to think that Homosexuality is a sin. Unfortunately for almost every religion EVER, the followers of that religion are not knowledgable in their "scriptures" and follow the religion blindly. And the one's that are knowledgable are taught by someone else. And they are not developing opinions by themselves. They have read the passages and tkane interpretations nad passed those interpretations down to their pupils. Look at the defenition of the word interpretaton: According to merriam webster (direct copy and paste quote)a particular adaptation or version of a work, method, or style . If it is that persons adaptation of something how can you be right or wrong about a passage? So, here, as you all read this and go,.. oh wait! OPINION! Oh man, forgot about that! None if it is fact people. So, in my conclusion, I will leave you with this. Kevin, is no more wrong then.. well the example of the sun setting and rising. Well, you certainly put an interesting twist on the bible. First of all God does not hate but loves the homosexual, buts hates homosexuality!
God did not REWARD Lot with sex with his two daughters. God doesn't govern every second of our lives. The daughters did this of their own will. As far as his age, remember people lived hundreds of years. He could easily have managed it.
Lot's wife disobeyed God. To Him, it wasn't trivial. The Bible is full of accounts of those and punishment who disobyed him. As far as him GIVING his daughters to the crowd, in those days guests in your house (not to mention angels) were honored and protected even above family. Lot probably knew the importance of his guests.
Why does God object to same sex relationships? Many Gays call it "natural" a variance of the word nature. But having dealt with animals most of my life, I know I have never seen ANY species of animal but man go after its on sex. Look your article is true to the biblicle word. There are some serious problems with it though. First I fail to see where you tie it in to homosexuality being right or wrong in gods eyes. Second Lot was going to give his two virgin daughters to the men of the city in order to protect the angel. In his eyes he was protecting a direct servant of god and it was worth the sacrafice.Third question, I was wondering why you didn't elaborate on the fact that these men were going to rape an angel? I would certainly say that would lend credentials to the somewhat popular belief that god hates fags.Fourth as far as the incest goes, There are many scientists who believe the gene pool of that time was not so contaminated as it is now. In fact if the bible is to believed we are all inbred. Incest in that era would not be uncommon at all. In fact god encouraged it by telling men and women to breed and populate the earth. I doubt if the powers that rule and guide our lives "hate" anything. They just are! The affairs of man are a small part of something much greater; and are too small to sway the whole. "Hate" is a lack of self control and discipline. Some one may injure us, but no one can make us angry, sad, mean, or hateful. Although I totally disagree with your view of the bible I do not believe God hates gays. God does hate sin...ALL sin, but he loved the world (and everyone in it) so much that he gave His only begotten Son to die on the cross so ALL could be saved. The bible clearly states that ALL have sinned and come short of the glory of God. Salvation is a free gift from God and all it takes to receive it is to accept Jesus and His gracy. No one can ever be good enough to get into heaven on his/her own. The only way is through Jesus Christ. Christ taught that we are to love one another as He loved us. He loved us enough to die in our place to pay for our sins. If we all loved each other that much the world would be a much better place. You seem to be misunderstood. It was the culture at that time that guests were treated with great respect. Lot was allowing the men to “gang rape two innocent little girls” so that they could leave his guests alone. Lot was in a dilemma: either be a good father or be a good guest entertainer. Lot choose the latter, and guess what? That saved not only his life, but the lives – and virginity – of his daughters. Had Lot chosen to throw the guests out to the men, the outcome could have been drastically different. I think Lot made the right choice.

I have to say, Mr. Cassell, you really make my day whenever I read this. I went to Catholic school for 13 years (I'm in college now) and suffered listening to all those Bible stories. My senior year in high school, I wrote a paper about religious beliefs and homosexuality (in terms of Christianity) and actually sited you in it. I tell everyone I speak to regarding homosexuality about this interpretation, and am about to recommend it to my Poly Sci professor. I would love it if you did more of this kind of thing! I have to agree with your interpretation if only because it proves what most Christians don't want to admit. The bible is full of contradictions and which is the one god endorses no one knows. Of course, this is akin to arguing over whether or not Hogwarts exists, right. The bible is merely the greatest work of fiction ever written. I grant that. After trying , I've found there's no way around the bible scriptures.

So rather than interprete individual scriptures , I have a hypothesis on the bible as a whole.

The scriptures were written to be a guide for man kind for thousands of years. All that was wrong in the world was observed , and with wisdom , a handful of people wrote the greatest book of all time to address the problems.

To keep interest, the book had many stories with fictional characters (like all stories, these were based on truth). To keep people faithful to the book , God was invented. The wise people who wrote the book knew it would help save the world.

But they also knew that they could not have false statements in their book. To do so would mean the end of faith.

After probably millions of unjust deaths over thousands of years in the name of God (among the more recent being the 9/11 incident), and so much hate, the laws that once long ago guided all who followed them to prosperity seem to be quickly fading in righteousness.

It's time for those who hold fast such laws to let go, and take responsibility for the freedoms they are having forced upon them.

To create a better world with their own foresight. With not faith in a book, but with faith in people.

I don't know. I am gay and often fight for inclusion of GLBT folks in all religions, and I feel your article is dampening my work. I feel it is quite fine, though how hurtful if may be, what Fred Phelps is doing, because you have to understand it from his point of view. He feels (and I have reviewed his website, though I don't prefer or condone scare-tactics and judgment in ministry and evangelism) actual sorrow for homosexuals and believes that they can repent of their sins, and go to heaven. Now as a Christian, I believe this too. I also believe that my lifestyle is a sin, but God forgives me and that he understands, just as he understood Lot in his situation.

You see the Devil used my longing to be heterosexual to tear me away from God. Soon I was not worshiping God but instead the "curing" of my homosexuality. One night God spoke to me (yes God speaks to me often) and told me that this was Satan and that I must first love his creation before he can heal me, and I am still working on that, I am learning to love the way God made me, and then when I am affirmed that I love God's creation, I would return and God will use me, and it is quite possible that I will struggle with homosexuality for the rest of my life, but God is okay with that.

Now you must also look at the intentions of Fred Phelps. His intention might be to hurt people, if so, you can fully dismiss him as even a Christian because the fruit of the spirit are not present, and that he is and evil-doer himself who will surely not inherit the kingdom of heaven. But if his intentions are pure, and he truly loves those he is preaching against and feels that scare-tactics and harsh words are the way to get through to some people (which unfortunately is the only reason some people do turn to Jesus, and perhaps then the converters might have the wrong intention in that they are trying to avoid hell and not trying to love the Lord God Jesus Christ, and accept that he died for his sins.) while most other people don't respond very well to this abrasive technique (I didn't).

So in closing, I say to you that you are perhaps no wiser than Phelps, and by degrading a whole group of people and an entire religious canon, that you are doing more harm to your cause (and mine) than good.

The point of the passage about Lot and his daughters was not to give an example of incest to justify ambiguities regarding our sexuality. God condones neither incest nor drunkenness. (Leviticus 18:6, 7, 29; 1 Corinthians 6:9, 10) Moreover, Abraham’s nephew Lot deplored the “lawless deeds” of Sodom’s inhabitants and evidently grieved over the wrong conduct in which he himself got involved, for the Examiner of hearts (God) viewed him as “righteous” which is why he was spared. (2 Peter 2:8) The very fact that Lot’s daughters got him intoxicated suggests that they realized he would not consent to having sexual relations with them while he was sober. As a Christian who has dealt with the ISSUE since I was a child...it amazes me that I was ignored and made fun of as a child and had my life ruined because 'the culture' did not understand me.
